In Tableau Desktop, sometimes using a filter causes an error "This query would contain joins or aggregations that are not allowed" in AtScale Design Center's "Queries" page.

SYMPTOM

In Tableau Desktop, a filter sometimes causes an error "This query would contain joins or aggregations that are not allowed" in AtScale Design Center's "Queries" page.

ROOT CAUSE

  1. If you have multiple Filters placed in the filter pane  in a Tableau worksheet
  2. If there is no direct relation between those filter dimensions
  3. The "Only Relevant Values" option is selected for all or some of these filters, while the default setting is "All Values in Database."

Since the "Only Relevant Values" option is selected for a few or all filters and some of the filter dimensions are unrelated, the AtScale planner is not finding a direct path to join these dimension values to implement Relevant values for each filter. Hence the error.

RESOLUTION

Change the filter(s) to the "All Values in Database" option instead of "Only Relevant Values." This setting change should make the filters independent of each other, and the Joins will be removed on the factless queries.
